Prestigious

The art of glamour

SQUARE-SPINE HARDBACK WITH HALF-CLOTH

Rigidity, strength and elegance

“The secret of my prestige shall remain my secret,” said the great artist Salvador Dalí. I would like a moustache equal to the great master’s, but I have to settle for this!
But today is a different day, I want to tell you why they call me Prestigious.
They say that the hardback cover that dresses me does confer importance and charm. It must be because of this characteristic of mine that I am chosen especially for volumes that require a certain rigidity: a catalogue, an art book or a luxury edition.

My elegance starts with the paper or cloth plank that wraps the structure: front and back covers and spine. The plank sometimes consists entirely of a single material, in other words “full binding”; in other cases two different materials are used, one for the spine and one for the boards, leading to the name “half cloth.” Usually the plank runs beyond the size of the cover, so that it is then tucked in allowing the cardboard to be totally covered. Traditionally, the cover exceeds the size of the book, which is why the edge is created extending beyond the pages.

Thanks to my edge, those who choose me are able to leaf through the pages with ease by leveraging the tip of their finger on it.
The milled or sewn book block is glued onto the spine and attached to the cover by two end papers; this increases my mechanical strength and covers the tucked edge of the plank.

Stretchy

Where the show comes alive

FLEXIBOUND

Flexibility and lightness.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to my show! I am Stretchy, the contortionist of this fantastic group and the compromise between a hardback and a paperback.
You have certainly met me at least once in your life , most probably when you used textbooks or manuals back in school, or even during your travels with a guide.

Are you wondering why they call me Stretchy?
Well, flexibound is the right solution when it comes to covers. Mine is made with a printed and laminated 250-350 g/m2 cardstock or a bonded cloth, as in my case
…and still I am very flexible!

As with traditional hardback, also my cover is slightly larger than the book block, with the flaps tucked in to increase strength and refine the edges. If you look at my spine instead, you will find that it is round, but it may also be square. My cover is glued to the end papers of the book block, which is perfectly milled or sewn. I am definitely a smart, lightweight model easy to leaf through. I am suitable for creating volumes with the same finish and quality as hardcover books, thanks to the addition of a bookmark and finishing with headbands.

Wanted

The book thief

SWISS HARDBACK

Lay-flat block, exposed spine and 45° cuts.

It is not easy to spot me in the bookbinding scene, but when you do, it will be hard for you to choose anything else. This is why I am Wanted.

Being a Swiss hardback, I attach myself to the book in an entirely different way compared to the classic and more frequent bindings such as paperbacks or hardbacks. As a matter of fact, only the lower surface of the book body is attached, so the inside front cover and the spine remain free to open flat on a table or book rest.

As you can see, my exposed spine is covered with vinyl glue, which leaves the multicoloured thread of the stitching visible; moreover, I am endowed with an index part. Do you see why I am Wanted now? There are many types of indexing; mine is called “U” indexing. It is made by cutting the book block to classify and divide contents; the coloured sheets are subsequently glued to the signatures near the spine, making it possible to add single-sheet inserts to the book block, even if they have different materials and formats.

Also, take a moment to look at the 45° cuts on the spine of the cover: they are a special feature of mine to replace the hinges of the cover. The singled cardboard sheet closure gives my cover a perfectly clean and aesthetically pleasing appearance than a cover with traditional hinges.

Soft

Wrestling is my business

SOFTBACK

Softness, flexibility and lightness.

You have never felt anything softer, have you? Still, I am durable and versatile: sometimes looks can be deceiving!

Let me introduce myself: I am Soft, in name and in deed.

What makes me unique compared with the classic hardback? I am covered with soft materials, generally a rubber-based coagulate that offers a pleasant feel to the touch. However, I can also be made with a simple paper of appropriate grammage.

I can be a pocket-size planner or a haute couture catalogue, thanks to my flexible cover, which is prepared by attaching the endpapers to a soft material combined with a light paperboard whose colour resembles the cover or raw-cut hardback.

Moreover, vinyl glue is employed in making me, as well as a material that tends to colour thermobonding during hot printing! Obviously, this is not a feature of all softbacks, but only in my specific case!

Other characters will only speak well of me!

Marked

I am the Law!

RAW-CUT HARDBACK

Visible raw-cut cardboard.

Hey gringo, come closer. I’m on the trail of some bandits, I should be after them by now, have you seen them by chance?

I am the sheriff, also known as Marked: you can see for yourself why!

Here I enforce the law of the raw-cut hardback. In this technique, three sides of the volume are cut, leaving the cover cardboard exposed.

The final cut makes the book block flush with the cover , so it does not project beyond the pages. In this case the cardboard becomes an aesthetic element, just like my scar, reminding me every day of the dangers of the Wild West!

My cardboards may have different colors (grey, white or black), and my cover can have visible hinges, or unmarked joints. Of course, mine are marked!

Gringo, let me tell you one last thing. As you can see, I have several tip-ins: they have been evened out at the foot and you will find, in order, a glued-on tip-in, one overlapped externally to the signature, and the last one stitched internally to the signature.

Adios, amigos!

Rounded

An all-round chef

ROUND HARDBACK

Firmness and round spine.

…And I decorate everything with a sprinkle of chantilly cream!

And who are you? The commis chef?

Go buy the ingredients for Tiramisù Now!

What? Do you want to know something about the round spine hardback? You could have told me right away, I will tell you everything. Oh, I almost forgot: nice to meet you, I am Rounded.

I am completely different from the square-spine hardback (the one they call Prestigious), mostly because of my spine. In the past, different tools were used to get the typical rounded shape, allowing the outermost signatures to lay on the cardboard and prevent the excessive weight from damaging the block. Then ribbings were added to increase the tenacity of the volume.

Today, the round spine is used for books of considerable thickness and is shaped using specially prepared moulds and heat directly in the casing lines. Sounds a lot like baking, doesn’t it?

If you look closely at me, you will notice vinyl glue in my spine, as well as my rounded corners and elastic band, which were obtained while preparing the plank before embedding the block.

Now come over here and give me a hand with this cake!

Lady B

Elegance is timeless

BODONIAN BINDING WITH CARDBOARD SPINE

Resistance and elegance.

I am Lady B, brainchild of famous Italian engraver, typographer and printer Giambattista Bodoni. He was the first in the 18th century to think of protecting the volumes he printed.

My father invented not only the typefaces that took his name, Bodoni, but especially the cloth-only Bodonian hardback binding. Gruppo Padovana refined his technique by ideating the Bodonian with cardboard spine.

The Bodonian binding technique uses a three-piece cover in which the spine is independent of the partially overlapping cardboards, which are mounted later.

Right now I am wearing an exquisite sample of Bodonian binding, which features a cardboard core made of black pulp and lined with grey paper, creating a two-tone visible edge due to the head and tail raw cut. The cardboard in the spine is used to strengthen the finished volume and is often used in catalogues and large books. The Bodonian binding endows the volume with both solidity and distinct elegance.

After these well-mannered frivolities, I take my leave.

Aesthete

No one is like me

FLEXYCOVER

Wrinkle-free spine.

I am thrilled to welcome you in my humble abode. Please, take a seat and accept a cup of tea.

I am Aesthete, brainchild of Gruppo Padovana, the flexycover paperback and the fanciest of all the volumes you have met so far.

My binding is achieved by gluing the cover to the endpapers with two paperboards without attaching the spine to the book block.

My advantages?

As an aesthete, my visual aspect is a priority for me, and I care about every single detail. My easy opening is a proof, and you can see it does not generate wrinkles in the outer spine, leaving my cover perfect in all its beauty, even with high thickness and after many openings.

This type of packaging is applicable to both milled and sewn book blocks. Now, would you like to see my art gallery?

Flat

Freestyle Champion

180° BINDING

180° opening.

Hi guys! I am the winner, simply the best! My name is Tony Extreme and I am the universal Freestyle Motocross champion, but you can call me “Flat”. Why? … because I am the only one who managed to do the impossible “180° Tornado Flat Back-Flip” jump.
It is a crazy stunt with a run-up after a full-throttle straight at 180 kilometres per hour, whereI open my legs in a 180-degree angle with both hands attached to the handlebars. A flat angle indeed!

Actually, this is also a technique recently developed by Gruppo Padovana: they call it “180° binding,” since the pages of the book block open flat without forcing the spine, just like my stunt.

In this type of binding, the pages are glued together with the endpapers, and a gauze is applied to the spine to keep them intact. To complete the stunt, a hardback, dust jacket or Swiss paperback can be put on.

This stunt has won me several awards; it is very popular, especially for medium-low thickness catalogues with printing on two adjacent sides, due to the lack of breaks along the spine and because the book opens flat. Photos look particularly great on books with this binding… even more if the photo is my “180° stunt”!

Sassy

From the Moulin Rouge with love

RAW-CUT BODONIAN HARDBACK WITH VISIBLE SPINE

Easy to open and visible spine.

Bonjour mesdames et messieurs et bienvenues to the Moulin Rouge! I am Sassy, a Can-Can dancer. Tonight we will dance together, but first let me tell you what life is like in the Belle Époque for a raw-cut Bodonian with a visible spine like me.

My special feature is a refe stitching on the spine, which is made by running a thread from the outside of the signatures to the inside, holding them together to form the book block.

In this style of binding, the spine is not covered and the signatures remain visible… in fact, you can spot the refe on my costume, look at me!

A Can-Can dancer must be unique, sophisticated and functional, just like a raw-cut Bodonian binding.

Now look at my cover: a die-cut cup, hot-printed coffee beans with colored foil, and the heat of the drink rendered with clear foil.

A semi-transparent jacket protects the embellishments. Now please take a seat… the show is about to begin!

Magical Reality

FOLDER WITH SINGER AND SPIRAL-BOUND NOTEBOOKS

Easy to leaf through.

I am Illusionist, Master of Magic, and I will execute a number the world has never seen before. There is no trick, it’s all real. When I say Confundus, you will enter into a trance and forget everything you read on this page…
…1……2………3, CONFUNDUS!

Think about two types of packaging and don’t tell me which ones you have chosen…well…you have definitely thought of a Folder with Singer and Spiral book! This magic folder combines two different papers successively creased. There are two types of binding within.
The first two booklets are bound with spirals: the former is plastic and continuous, the latter is called “Wire-O” and is composed of coated wire loops. This technique is used for products that need to be easily leafed through, such as recipes, price lists, street maps, etc.

The other half of the magic folder features Singer stitching, the right solution when the block is too thin for sewn or milled paperback. The enchanted thread may be white or colored, creating contrasting or tone-on-tone colour play with the cover.
There are two different types of stitching: “saddle” stitching is Singer-sewn along the fold of the sheets, makes the book easy to open and the thread is visible both outside and inside; on the other, the “side” stitching is placed a few millimetres from the spine and all the sheets are sewn together. The spine can consist of the edges of the inner sheets or be of the same material as the cover.

Jumper

Full throttle!

FOLDER WITH PAPERBACK NOTEBOOKS

Simplicity and versatility.

Biiip…Biiip…oh c’mon! I really can’t stand the daily traffic jam, I preferred when instead of using cars I hopped moving people inside my pocket. Hey you, where do you need to go? Hop on, I am Jumper, a folder with paperback books. So you want to go to Padua, don’t you? Fine then, the journey is long so in the meantime I can tell you more about my features.

I have a hard cover consisting of three pieces, turned in and finished inside with a previously glued die-cut paperboard which creates two pockets containing two paperbacks (or other types of lay-flat books, spiral-bound and Singer sewn).

I will also show you a milled paperback and a sewn paperback. The milled paperback gets its name from its unique process: the signatures that make up the block are milled on the spine end during the gluing process, creating grooves, and increasing the strength so that the sheets do not tear out easily. Next, glue is spread on the spine and in the first few millimeters of the first and last pages, and finally the cover formed from a cardstock is applied.

In sewn paperback, the signatures are sewn together to create a single block. A bit of glue is then spread on the spine, followed by the cover. This technique provides durability by preventing the individual sheets from peeling off and makes the book very easy to leaf through.

DAISYBIND

Elegance, 180° block, removable pages.

Dionaea muscipula; Heliamphora pulchella;
Darlingtonia californica; HELLO.
Come closer, relax and let yourself be rocked by my plants and roots, do not be afraid, nothing will happen to you… Would you like to taste a sip of my juice? it is very sugary and I am sure you will love it! My name is Daisybind, but you can call me Special, because I absorb the best features of other characters, which is why I am so elegant, refined and special.
For example, my block is made with 180° binding, which guarantees excellent opening and readability of the pages, with the possibility of separating them from the book block itself with a simple gesture. This is why these volumes are highly favoured as notebooks and notepads.

My cover, on the other hand, is hardback and made of a durable material to give greater protection to your important notes.
The spine of the block is not glued to the cover, which would prevent the pages from opening; instead, it is connected only via the endpapers.

As you know color is essential, so a colorful detail has been included in the front cover along with a matchy stitching. To complete the package, the corners of the book block are rounded just like the hardcover to ease tearing and make the book pocket-friendly.
What do you say? Can’t move anymore?

Don’t worry…you are the SPECIAL dish today!

Bold

Always ready for battle!

JAPANESE OTABIND WITH FLAPS

Softness, reversed quartos, and a perfect spine.

The samurai’s word is firmer than metal. I have taken an oath of honor with the daimyo, the lord of my lands, and I am willing to sacrifice my life in battle to protect my people. I am Bold, the samurai of the Japanese Otabind with flaps, which is a type of binding where the quartos are bound with the fold facing outward. This binding style comes from the Far East, and is used especially for catalogues and prestigious books. The reversed quartos allow the thickness of the block to be doubled, creating consistency and occasionally allowing the sheets to be bound like a paperback.

My binding is called Otabind because it differs from a simple paperback in the way in which the cover is attached to the block. In fact, there is no glue between the spine and the cover, but by adding scoring to the first few millimetres on the front and back covers, the outer signatures can be attached to the covering with a thin line of glue, leaving the spine free to open and avoiding unpleasant creases that would form after opening the volume multiple times.

We samurai seek to ennoble ourselves by following Bushido, “the way of the warrior,” a way of life based on the basic principles of honesty, loyalty and righteousness; in the same way, single pages can be ennobled through embossing, die-cutting, and other processes that do not spoil the back of the page.

“When someone is determined, the impossible does not exist: then one can move heaven and earth. But when one lacks courage, he cannot persuade himself. Moving heaven and earth effortlessly is a simple matter of concentration.”
